Reel Lineup lets your friends recommend movies to you. To do that we keep a small amount of information about you and the films you’ve watched. This page explains what we collect, who can see it, and how to delete it. We don’t sell your data and we don’t show ads.

What we collect

  • Your account. Your name, username, email address and a hashed password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile photo from Google instead of a password.
  • Your movie history. Films you’ve watched, your watchlist, your favorites, and, if you import from Letterboxd, the titles, years, watch dates, likes, star ratings and Letterboxd links in your export. We only read the watched, watchlist, likes and ratings files from the export.
  • Lineups. The movies friends pick for you, the order they put them in, and any notes they add. The same goes for lineups you build for others.
  • Your email settings. Whether you want an email when a friend watches one of your picks.
  • Sign-in sessions. When you sign in we record the time, your IP address and your browser’s user agent with the session, so we can keep you signed in and spot misuse.
  • Feedback you send. If you use the feedback button, we receive your message along with your name, email address and account ID so we can reply.

We don’t use analytics or advertising trackers. We use a single cookie to keep you signed in, plus short-lived cookies during Google sign-in. These are needed for the site to work, so there’s nothing to opt out of.

Who can see what

  • Anyone can see your name, username and profile photo on your profile page.
  • Your watched films and watchlist are private by default. You can make them public from your watched page, and switch them back at any time.
  • Friends building a lineup for you need to be signed in. While they build it, Reel Lineup uses your history to flag or hide films you’ve already seen and shows them films from your watchlist, even if your watched list is private.
  • A lineup and its notes are visible to the friend who built it and to you. If you hide a lineup, the friend who built it isn’t told.
  • When you mark a pick as watched, the friend who picked it can see that, and gets an email if they’ve turned that on.

Services we use

We share only what each service needs to do its job:

  • TMDB provides movie titles, posters and other film data. We send it search terms and titles to look up, never your account details.
  • Cloudflare sends our emails: account confirmation, password resets and pick notifications. It receives your email address and the message.
  • Google handles sign-in if you choose “Continue with Google”.
  • EasyCustomerFeedback runs the feedback button for signed-in users and receives what’s described above under “Feedback you send”.
  • Our hosting and backup providers store the database and its backups, including Amazon Web Services for backups.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect Reel Lineup or its users from abuse.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account from your account page, we delete your profile, watched history, watchlist, favorites, the lineups friends built for you and the lineups you built for friends right away. Copies can remain in our database backups for up to three days before they’re overwritten.

Your choices

  • Change your password, email settings and watched-list visibility at any time.
  • Turn off pick notification emails from the account page or the link in any such email.
  • Delete your account and everything in it from the account page.
  • Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct it, by emailing [email protected].

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights over your data, such as objecting to how we use it or complaining to your local data protection authority. Email us and we’ll help.

Children

Reel Lineup isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, email us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you’ve already given us, we’ll email you before it takes effect.
